Lineage 2 : One Shots: Revenge!Feb 24, 2009 02:00:00 PM News Item: 8792
Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Lineage 2, Lord of the Rings Online, One Shots
I can't tell you how many times I've personally swooped back to an area full of mobs that gave me trouble as I was leveling up. Of course, in Lord of the Rings Online, the fun part about it is that slaying tons of certain types of monsters will net you a deed - as well as just being good fun for revenge killing. Today's One Shots from Rhedbierd shows off one such setting of going back and cutting a swath through some bad guys, just for the hell of it! He writes in: This is a shot from Rhedbierd of the kinship Laer En Tul Acharn as they finish off their Giant Slayer (Advanced) deed in northwestern Evendim. Sometimes its fun to just go back to those mid-level areas as a high-level toonand complete deeds very quickly. You can never go wrong with killing hundreds of giants in a little over an hour. One Shots needs your screenshots - no matter what game you're playing, or what your story is. Gather some up and email them to us at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name and the game its from. We'll post your screens and let everyone know of your deeds. %Gallery-9798%One Shots: Revenge! Tue, 24 Feb 2009 14:00:00 EST. Comments
Lineage 2 : Know Your LotRO Lore: GimliFeb 17, 2009 03:00:00 PM News Item: 8706
Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Culture, Lore, meta, Education, Know Your LotRO Lore
Welcome to Know Your LotRO Lore, a new weekly column here at showcasing the lore of J.R.R. Tolkien's world as it intersects with Turbine's Lord of the Rings Online.
In this week's Know Your LotRO Lore, we're exploring the life of our favorite quirky dwarf, Gimli. You know and love him from the movies as played by John Rhys-Davies, or perhaps his animated adaptation as voiced by David Buck in Ralph Bakshi's 1978 Lord of the Rings cartoon.
Yet Gimli is a much deeper toonthan portrayed in Peter Jackson's movies or any cartoons. He is born of distant noble lineage and is the son of a main toonin The Hobbit. His story is much more than that of a Dwarf accompanying some Men, Hobbits and an Elf through Middle-earth, for each member of the Fellowship has their own unique importance to the tale. Follow along below for more on the Dwarf known as Gimli.Continue reading Know Your LotRO Lore: Gimli Know Your LotRO Lore: Gimli Tue, 17 Feb 2009 15:00:00 EST. Comments
Lineage 2 : Top 10 money-making MMORPGs of 2008Feb 02, 2009 01:00:00 PM News Item: 8217
Filed under: Fantasy, Business models, Economy, MMORPG industry, Free-to-play, Browser, Casual, Academic
In an upcoming "comprehensive study" by DFC Intelligence, they take a look at the top money-makers in the MMORPG space worldwide. To no one's surprise, World of Warcaft has topped the list, followed by several Asian MMORPGs like MapleStory, Lineage I and II, Shanda and Fantasy Westward Journey. As for the most users, this study doesn't touch on that. With such a wide discrepancy between active subscribers and prepaid game card users, it's a difficult number to tack down.
What makes this list frustrating is the complete lack of facts concerned. While WoW is reported to have earned $500 million+ in 2008, the next four on the list are reporting $150-$500 million, and the final five are reporting anything in the $50-$150 million range. To the company's credit, this isn't the final examination. Their detailed February 16th report promises to give more information on each of the top 10 games. We certainly look forward to that.Top 10 money-making MMORPGs of 2008 Mon, 02 Feb 2009 13:00:00 EST. Comments
Lineage 2 : Recession to Help Asian MMORPGs Push West?Feb 02, 2009 08:55:10 AM News Item: 8211
On Reuters India, a pair of columnists have made an argument that the recession hitting North America will help drive the business of the free-to-play MMORPGs that are being developed in Asia. While it seems that the majority of the article spotlightes on the Korean gaming fad - Lineage and Aion are specifically point outed - they have some actually sparkling commentary from a number of economic analysts who just love to spout off about MMORPG gamers. Here's the biggest winner:
"I don't think (online multigamer games) get impacted at all, because citizens who play them are addicts," said Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Morgan. "Losing their jobs makes them more likely to play because they have more time to play."

Lineage 2 : Worlds.com files suit against NCsoft for patent infringementDec 29, 2008 03:00:00 PM News Item: 7514
Filed under: MMORPG industry, News items, Legal, Virtual worlds
You might remember earlier in the month we reported on Worlds.com placing down patents on two technologies that we commonly use in the MMORPG industry -- scalable chat and system and method of enabling users of interacting in a virtual space -- and how much havoc this could play with our favorite games. We also made the assumption that lawyers were going to begin marching from Worlds.com with suits in hand, beginning their demands of money.
It turns out our assumption was right. Worlds.com has filed the necessary paper work to bring a suit against one of the big names in our industry: NCsoft. The suit was filed on Christmas Eve, December 24th, and charged NCsoft with infringement of patent 7,181,690, the system and method of enabling users of interacting in a virtual space, which was granted in early 2007. The suit cites all NCsoft titles, from Lineage to Aion, as the grounds for the patent infringement.
As ashortside note, patent 7,181,690 was filed in 2000 -- over a year after EverQuest commenceed and dominated the fledgling industry with somewhere around 300,000 subscribers.
We contacted Worlds.com for comment on the 14th of December in connection with our first story, but they have not returned our requests for comment.
We'll keep our ears to the ground as more developments appear in this story.
Update: We have additional commentary on this patent suit.Worlds.com files suit against NCsoft for patent infringement Mon, 29 Dec 2008 15:00:00 EST. Comments
Lineage 2 : Celebrating the holidays with Lineage II's Saving Santa eventDec 15, 2008 03:00:00 PM News Item: 7319
Filed under: Fantasy, Lineage 2, Events, in-game, Quests, News items, PvE, Humor The holidays are in full swing across several of the games we've been covering at . In fact, a number of massively multigamer online games now have holiday-themed quests, items, and unique winter settings, and NCsoft is getting in on the action as well. The latest holiday event pronouncement we've gotten word of is happening in Lineage II with its Saving Santa Event, which will run from December 16th through December 30th.
The holiday event pits you against one "Thomas D. Turkey" who holds Santa Claus captive. If Santa is freed, he will visit random gamers throughout the world, placing presents into their inventories. Some of the rewards include specialized buff scrolls for your occupation, weapon exchange tickets, a year-round Christmas tree, and for a rare few -- a Rudolph Agathion (pet).
If celebrating the holidays in Lineage II sounds like your thing, you'll want to look into the full pronouncement for the Saving Santa Event.Celebrating the holidays with Lineage II's Saving Santa event Mon, 15 Dec 2008 15:00:00 EST. Comments
Lineage 2 : "Return Home to Vana'diel" is back, and Squeenix hopes you will be tooDec 13, 2008 12:00:00 PM News Item: 7158
Filed under: Fantasy, Final Fantasy XI, Business models, News items The last "Return Home to Vana'diel" campaign ended in February this year, making the decision of whether to return to Final Fantasy XI a lot easier. Now, Square Enix is running the promotion again, givingprevious gamers the chance to restore their characters and making that decision a little less clear-cut. The campaign officially kicks off at midnight on Thursday, the 18th of December, and ends at 1am on April 15th. After that point, you'll be stuck with two choices: waiting for the chance of another campaign, or starting from scratch if you wish to resubscribe.
To sweeten the deal, re-subscribers will be able to obtain an Anniversary Ring which provides a 100% experience bonus. However, there are a couple of eligibility requirements:
- Characters who did not receive an Anniversary Ring during the Adventurer Appreciation Campaign in May 2008. - Characters who were created before Wednesday, May 28, 2008 and have logged into the game at least once since then.
*Note: Characters meeting the above requirements are able to receive an Anniversary Ring even without participating in the Return Home to Vana'diel Campaign.
That's right -- if you're already a subscriber and don't have an Anniversary Ring, this will be your chance to pick one up as well (this offer also ends on April 15th). Be warned though that deleting your current ring doesn't mean you can get another one.
This is a great opportunity to get back into FFXI, and we can't deny that there's a lot going on in the game right now -- but such a campaign would not be necessary if characters weren't deleted after 3 months. Is such a practice acceptable for today's MMORPGs?"Return Home to Vana'diel" is back, and Squeenix hopes you will be too Sat, 13 Dec 2008 12:00:00 EST. Comments
Lineage 2 : Anti-Aliased: You've been Auto-Assaulted, part deuxDec 01, 2008 04:00:00 PM News Item: 6906
Filed under: Sci-fi, MMORPG industry, News items, belief, Tabula Rasa, Anti-Aliased
I'm one of those citizens that likes to think that NCsoft has enough money to get by on. It's just my gut reaction that if you have a few successful games then you most likely have some spending money in your wallet. So, I like to think that NCsoft, even though they certainly took a pretty enormous hit when they invested in Tabula Rasa, could have easily kept the development process going. Perhaps it would have been much slower than it currently was, but there was no factorit couldn't keep going on some type level.
They have, at least, provided some compensation for gamers who are currently subscribed to the game; the chance to try out games like City of Heroes and Lineage 2 are offered in the stead of TR gameplay time.Continue reading Anti-Aliased: You've been Auto-Assaulted, part deux Anti-Aliased: You've been Auto-Assaulted, part deux Mon, 01 Dec 2008 16:00:00 EST. Lineage 2 : Lineage II's Kratei's Cube has ruthless Player vs Player, extremely creepy mobsNov 24, 2008 12:00:00 PM News Item: 6698
Filed under: Fantasy, Lineage 2, Patches
Having looked at Pailaka and New Kamaloka, we're as pleased about Lineage II's Gracia Part 2 update as anyone, but we have to confess we're now a little... creeped out. NCsoft has described another adventure area appearing in the update -- Kratei's Cube -- and as awesome as it sounds, those demented killer anime doll monsters are just plain freaky. It's high fantasy, not Chucky, alright?
Kidding aside, we've got the scoop on what you can find in Kratei's Cube. Once you sign up through an NPC on Fantasy Isle, you'll be whisked away to a big maze that resets every 30 minutes. During each cycle, gamers kill monsters -- and each other -- in a competition to rack up the most points. Once things settle down, folks receive experience, SP, and Fantasy Isle coins based on their performance.
The cool thing is that if you die in the maze, you'll pop back in with full health and mana, so there should be very little downtime. If you're in a party, carrying a cursed weapon, or of chaotic orientation, don't bother signing up though -- you won't be allowed in. Poor you!
