Dark Age Of Camelot : best of - Favorite new MMORPG of 2008Dec 16, 2008 02:30:00 PM News Item: 7329

Winner: Warhammer Online (writeup by William Dobson)
The hype-o-meter was off the charts just prior to Warhammer Online's release this year, and when the game finally did come out, gamers found it to be a refreshing change of pace at the same time as being a heck of a lot of fun. Unlike so many other MMORPGs out there, WAR allows you to get into the meat of the game right from level one if you so choose.
And what is that meat? Player versus Player combat, or Realm versus Realm (RvR) in this case. With the option to join a queue for an instanced setting battle from anywhere in the game, and open RvR battlefields located in every tier, bloodshed is always just a short step away. The distinction between Player vs Player and RvR is made extremely clear in WAR.
Class balance is not based on 1v1 battles, but rather, group-versus-group combat. The underlying goal of all the factional warfare is to siege keeps and capture territories, which is intended to require the co-operation of larger groups of gamers, and is reminiscent of Mythic's older and much-loved MMORPG Dark Age of Camelot. The ultimate glory in WAR is to have the chance to pillage the opposing realm's capital city, bootytheir dungeons and kill their king - sounds exciting just reading about it, right?
Even if you look past the RvR aspect of the game, WAR still brings a lot to the table: Public Quests, which give gamers a new way of coming together to accomplish PvE goals; the construction values and the way the world of Warhammer is brought to life; the Tome of Knowledge, which provides little incentives to achieve things in all areas of the game, and offers detailed lore.
Troubled, perhaps. Flawed, for sure. But with a team dedicated to improvements and a fantastic new spin on the fantasy standard, everything comes together amazingly well in Warhammer Online. It's nospeculateat all that it is our favorite new game of 2008.%Gallery-21882%Continue reading best of - Favorite new MMORPG of 2008 best of - Favorite new MMORPG of 2008 Tue, 16 Dec 2008 14:30:00 EST. Dark Age Of Camelot : Mythic Entertainment rebuts Jeff Kaplan's WAR critiquesOct 17, 2008 10:30:00 AM News Item: 5870
Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Warhammer Online, belief
Yesterday we noted an exchange between MTV Multigamer's Tracey John and Blizzard's Jeff Kaplan, talking about Blizzard's exclusion from the closed Warhammer Online Beta. After that article went up, John put up another post touching on Mythic Entertainment's response - specifically, a phone call from the company's head Mark Jacobs. Jacobs specifically called out the following:
- World of Warcraft featured a number of lengthy queues just to get onto worlds when the game first commenceed in 2004.
- Jacobs noted that EverQuest and his own DAoC featured customizable interfaces long before World of Warcraft was even commenceed.
- Though WAR does have many similarities to WoW, the team developing the game made many choices specifically to stray from WoW's template. "If you look at the innovations in Warhammer, you'd be hard-pressed to find as many in WoW."
Ultimately he goes on to note that Warhammer has just commenceed, and that they're actually happy with the way the game is going thus far. "The game stability has been unbelievable and it blows away any other online game ... we're going to be continuing to be doing a lot for the game over the next six months, or nine months, or six years." Dark Age Of Camelot : Grab bag #1 coincides with first substantial Warhammer Online patchSep 26, 2008 02:30:00 PM News Item: 5499
Filed under: Fantasy, New titles, Patches, Warhammer Online
Mythic Entertainment has long had a series of articles they call "Grab Bags" running on the Dark Age of Camelot site. The regular series answers questions directly from the gamers, making sure that even the most arcane and technical elements of gameplay are addressed to gamers' satisfaction. The very first Grab Bag for Mythic's newly commenceed Warhammer Online touches on a number of topics. Players want to know:
- How can you gain and lose City Rank?
- How do you get rest XP?
- Do alts in your guild slow down guild leveling?
All these and more are addressed in the WAR Herald's first Grab Bag. The Herald also reports on the game's first substantive patch! There have been a number of hotfixes to the game since commence last week, but a just-released tweak to the game fixes and changes a few Warhammer components under the hood. Player positions in worldqueues are now saved, for example. The bolster buff has been removed from the Kadrin's Valley RvR lake on Open-RvR worlds, and Tactic Trainers have been temorarily disabled inside the capital cities.
Get facts on all these changes, plus answers to the Grab Bag questions, over at the Warhammer Herald.

Dark Age Of Camelot : Mythic Entertainment to work with IGDA on credit attribution for WarhammerSep 25, 2008 07:00:00 AM News Item: 5451
Filed under: Fantasy, Dark Age of Camelot, Launches, MMORPG industry, New titles, Warhammer Online Late last month, before Warhammer had even commenceed, there was a minor dustup between the International Game Developer's Association and Mythic Entertainment. Mythic allegeed that the sheer number of citizens who had worked on the game made proper accreditation impossible, and would only be recognizing the citizens on the venturewhen the game commenceed. IGDA responded via its newsletter that it found that disrespectful to the citizens who had previously worked on the game, and took Mythic GM Mark Jacobs to task for the oversight. We've since noted the release of the Warhammer credits video to the game's official website.
Though Mythic hasn't made a formal pronouncement to this effect, IGDA has announced that the EA subsidiary will be taking pains to recognize everyone who has worked on the project. Furthermore, Mythic will take pains to create an online database tracking credits for titles under their control. Mark Jacobs will even work with the organization to help them understand the issues inherent to MMORPG development. Mr. Jacobs expands on this pronouncement in a post to his personal blog.
At the end of the day, we're just glad everyone is getting the nod they richly deserve. [Via Broken Toys] Comments
Dark Age Of Camelot : WAR: Head Start Patch NotesSep 14, 2008 11:22:08 AM News Item: 5194
The Warhammer Online patcher is ready today's Head Start, and the patch notes contain a great message from Mythic Entertainment's Mark Jacobs. Welcome to Warhammer Online!
Folks,
A little over three years since work began on Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, the day of reckoning is now upon us. When we acquired the rights to do a Warhammer Fantasy based MMORPGRPG from Games Workshop back in 2005, I promised them we would create a great and glorious game; a game that they could be proud of and one that would bring Warhammer Fantasy to the entire world. And here we are, about to enter a brand new MMORPGRPG world. Everyone at Mythic hopes that you enjoy your adventures in WAR as much as we have enjoyed creating WAR. We hope that this will be an epic journey for you and for our game as this is but the first step for both of us. What you will see today is just the beginning of WAR's evolution as we plan on putting even greater effort into enhancing and expanding WAR just as we did with Dark Age of Camelot. Enjoy your Head Start but remember, you have a long road ahead of you so take time to enjoy the scenery along the way.
My thanks go out to every one of you who reads this letter for choosing to be a guest in our world and for pre-ordering our game. My thanks also go out to every member of Mythic Entertainment and Electronic Arts who helped make this game and this moment possible. It was a truly team effort and it shows.
WAR is now upon us and it is glorious!
Mark Jacobs
VP, GM EA/Mythic Entertainment
See you all on the battlefield!

Dark Age Of Camelot : Warhammer's open beta goes great in US, epic failure in EUSep 08, 2008 10:30:00 AM News Item: 5033
Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Warhammer Online Though for a while it looked like the European Warhammer community was online and in the Beta problems have continued to plague EU WAR gamers. These are problems persisting from this past weekend, and as a effect the EU section of the Warhammer Alliance boards are full of ticked off gamers spitting invectives. It's easy to see why when when this official status update thread has such dire and worrisome phrases associated with it. Though gamers had already assumed as much, it looks like the blame for this failure falls at the feet of GOA. The European publisher for Warhammer (as well as DAoC and a number of other games) has a reputation among gamers for frustrations and customer service issues.
Over at Mark Jacobs' blog, it sounds like Mythic made sure to communicate some of those frustrations directly to the French publisher. Says the CEO, "We had a number of conversations with them today about everything that happened. GOA messed up and their CEO has apologized and promised to do better going forward." He also notes his own frustration at some of the harsh words written over the weekend by frustrated gamers, noting that the game's Beta state means it's not ready for prime-time yet. Hopefully GOA will see this as a learning experience.
Edited to reflect ongoing state of EU Beta.

Dark Age Of Camelot : EA's Gibeau on WoW, WAR and SporeSep 01, 2008 08:23:45 PM News Item: 4886
EA's Gibeau discusses WoW killing in a kinder gentler way.
Citing his multiple level 70 World of Warcraft characters as background, Frank Gibeau brings out some fascinating thoughts and numbers during his discussion with Gamespot. Obviously EA is getting ready to ship Warhammer Online, but Frank doles out some information before discussing how WoW has become the killer app:
"There's always that ultimate killer app that comes out and creates a mass-market opportunity, and WOW is that for the MMORPG category. And what they've done is create millions and millions of gamers who are now comfortable with the way MMORPGs play, they're comfortable with the models, and they're looking for more."
In other news, Frank discusses the other two MMORPGs that EA already has (Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot) and that DAoC still has over 100,000 subscribers and is quite profitable. That surprises me to some degree, but I say good on them. While Frank didn't divulge any new information on the KOTOR MMORPG, he did say that he is:
"... no longer greenlighting games that are single-gamer only, even console products. They have to have deep online modes because that's where our fans are spending a lot of time and, frankly, that's where a lot of the value in the IPs we create can actually take hold."
This is extremely telling in that the game creators are finally getting the fact that gamers want to play with each other in addition to against each other. To take hold, a game has to offer that ongoing relationship with the gamers. Speaking of growing arms and relationships, for those of you salivating waiting for Spore, Frank discusses how they plan on handling the issues of "Sporn":
"Ah, sporn. Well, we have filters and parental controls, so if citizens are of age, they can see it if they want to see it. On our worlds, we've got very vigorous controls and are going to keep it out. But you can create whatever you want and upload it to YouTube. That's the beauty of Spore, in a way--it goes where your creativity takes you, and isn't limited to a game design. Basically, publishing Spore is like selling crayons. What you draw with them, I can't help."

Dark Age Of Camelot : WAR wins the Best Online Game award at LeipzigAug 25, 2008 06:00:00 PM News Item: 4175
Filed under: Fantasy, Contests, Culture, Events, real-world, MMORPG industry, New titles, Warhammer Online
The record-setting Games Convention in Leipzig just ended and over 200,000 citizens are beginning the recovery process as we speak. Not only was this convention a roaring success, it has already been announced for a return to Leipzig next year as well. In addition to this, the awards have been given out for the best games of the show, and Warhammer Online nabbed the Best Online Game award.
According to their press release: "The creators of the online RPG legend Dark Age of Camelot, still so successful today, are back with Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. GOA squares up to the alpha male World of Warcraft with spectacular visuals, innovative play modi, neat control and an enormous, pleasingfantasy world." Our congratulations goes out to the folks at EA Mythic as we (im)patiently wait for September 18th to arrive! Comments
