Anarchy Online : Anarchy Online update adds raid interface, turns zones into instancesBy: Samuel Axon
Sep 29, 2008 09:00:00 AM News Item: 5523
Filed under: Sci-fi, Anarchy Online, Patches, News items
Anarchy Online's version 17.1 update went live last week. It added a complete raid interface to the game, allowing players to combine up to six teams into a raid group with its own chat channel and loot rules. The interface will allow raid leaders to move players between teams, and every player in the raid group will be able to monitor the vitals of other raid group members.
Additionally, a handful of AO's existing playfields -- Sectors 13, 28 and 35 to start with -- have become raid instances. That means that raid groups can take these encounters on at their own pace and without competition. Funcom plans to do this to more playfields in the future.
The update also features your standard assortment of bug fixes and gameplay and balance tweaks. Read the patch notes at the AO website for details. Comments
Anarchy Online : Funcom's product manager speaks out on Gaute Godager's departureBy: Shawn Schuster
Sep 19, 2008 07:30:00 PM News Item: 5314
Filed under: Fantasy, Age of Conan, Interviews, MMO industry With the recent news of Age of Conan's Gaute Godager departing Funcom so suddenly, many players want to know what happened exactly. As an original founder of the company and through 16 years of employment at Funcom, one can only wonder what this says about the company. So MTV Multiplayer was able to sit down to a short interview with Funcom's product manager Jorgen Tharaldsen concerning this sudden departure of Godager.
Tharaldsen is understandably positive about the new direction of the company under replacement game director Craig Morrison. He praises Morrison's work as a community manager at Funcom and as a game director for Anarchy Online. Yet he also touches on the legacy of Godager and what he has meant to the history of MMOs in general. Not much else is said about the reasoning behind Godager's departure (besides what Godager has already said himself), but Tharaldsen seems optimistic about the future of the company and Age of Conan. Anarchy Online : Producer & game director for Age of Conan resigns from FunComBy: Kyle Horner

Some big shake-ups seem to be happening over at FunCom today as Gaute Godager resigns from his position at the company as producer and game director for Age of Conan. His replacement is Craig Morrison, who's held the same position with Anarchy Online for several years prior to this change. While most (or more than half) will agree that Age of Conan is in a very dissatisfying state, this news still comes as a shock. Gaute Godager was one of the founders of FunCom and is leaving the company and the games industry after 16 years. He was also a part of Age of Conan's development since its conception.
Incoming producer/director Craig Morrison stepped fully into the Conan community to greet the players today, as well. You can read his address to the faithful on the official forums. Follow the break for Godager's parting words and reasons for leaving FunCom.

Anarchy Online : Mythic's Mark Jacobs Talks Age of ConanBy: Martuk
Sep 02, 2008 01:03:42 PM News Item: 4903
Let the Flames Begin...
Mythic Vice president and "Warhammer Online" Lead; Mark Jacobs recently spoke to Tracey John about games such as Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures and Hellgate London which was posted at Mtv.com. Jacobs discusses Hellgate London and why he wants to see Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures succeed, but stating he feels the game should have been delayed.
With Jacobs having played the game and having read fan postings on both the “Warhammer” and “Age of Conan” forums, he thought that Funcom should have delayed the game. “I think that the greatest mistake that they made was not listening and not learning from what had gone before,” Jacobs said, referring to the launch issues of Funcom’s “Anarchy Online” in 2001. “When they looked at ['Age of Conan'] when they were ready to launch, I can’t imagine how they didn’t see the issues that other people saw. According to their annual reports, they had plenty of money. They should’ve looked at it and said, ‘We need to delay this game.’ There are probably reasons I’m not aware of… but I think that’s their biggest sin.”

Anarchy Online : Funcom Security Exploits PatchedBy: Martuk
Sep 02, 2008 12:45:40 PM News Item: 4902
Dan Caselden and Gabriel Landau of Independent Security Evaluators recently checked into Funcom games Anarchy Online and Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures. The evaluators discovered some rather disturbing exploits within the games. One of which could even allow a hacker to take control of the targets computer. Fortunately, ndependent Security Evaluators contacted Funcom and the problems have since been patched to prevent any future issues.
8/28/08 - Funcom released patches for both games today. Both vulnerabilities were fixed in Anarchy Online. In Age of Conan, the directory traversal vulnerability has been fixed, but the buffer overflow remains. We do not believe that the buffer overflow alone currently poses a serious risk to players, but we recommend that Funcom fix it promptly so it cannot be used in any future hybrid attacks. In the meantime, we suggest that players exercise caution when downloading custom game scripts from third parties.

Prompt patching closes another exploit door
Dan Caselden and Gabriel Landau of Independent Security Evaluators recently checked into the games of Funcom, Anarchy Online and Age of Conan. Unfortunately, they found some pretty large vulnerabilities, some that would even allow a hacker to take over the victim's computer. Before revealing these exploits to the public, Independent Security Evaluators contacted Funcom to inform them of the problem they found. Prompt patching commenced:

American readers: are you going to Dragon*Con this Labor Day weekend? Funcom (developer of Anarchy Online, Age of Conan, and The Secret World) is! Its specific plans have been laid out at the Age of Conan website.
The company will have its own booth, of course, which will be open from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM Friday through Sunday, and from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Monday. More interestingly, though, Funcom will be hosting what it calls the "FunCon Event" in the Sheraton Capital Ballroom on Friday at 10:00 PM. The party will feature music by DJ Tarryk and visitors from the teams of all three Funcom projects.
The following day, Funcom will present its two currently-released games -- Anarchy Online at 10:00 AM and Age of Conan at 7:00 PM. Somewhere amidst all these proceedings, fans will have the opportunity to win posters, inflatable swords, t-shirts, lanyards, custom PC cases, and "one special customized Anarchy Online PC." That's cool. It's probably not cool enough to go out of your way to go to Dragon*Con for, but if you're already gonna be there you might as well stop by. Check out Massively's complete Dragon*Con schedule for other events and booths to hit up, too.
