Aion : Exclusive Aion Flight and Archetype InterviewJan 21, 2009 08:36:52 AM News Item: 7881
Over the past few years, the Ten Ton Hammer team has been eagerly
scooping up every piece of Aion: The Tower of Eternity
development news that we could get our hands on. There hasn’t
been much
officially released for the US public, but we’ve done our
best to give
you the scoop on this epic game. But since the grand public unveiling
of Aion to North American audiences at
2008’s Penny Arcade
Expo, the US creators for NCsoft’s upcoming high fantasy
MMORPG have
gone relatively quiet. Thankfully, the Ten Ton Hammer team was able to
nab a few answers to some nagging Aion questions,
and if you’re eagerly awaiting this beautiful MMORPG, make sure
you look into this conversation!
Ten Ton Hammer: The archetype approach for character
creation has been attempted before to mixed effects, most notably with EverQuest
2.
In that game the system ultimately didn't go over so well as it left
gamers feeling a bit disconnected from the class they ultimately
wanted to play, so was later dropped altogether. How has gamer
reception been with the archetypes in Aion thus far?
Will there
be a more seamless progression between archetype and main class that
helps ease gamers into specific combat roles?
Chris Hager: Aion’s class
system is designed to be
intuitive. We want gamers to make an easy first decision and enter the
world to learn about the story, the combat, the questing, and general
game mechanics without having to worry about whether they picked the
right class. By providing four general choices at the beginning a
gamer can get in and learn the game before making game altering
decisions. The second class choice you make is fairly early on, within
the first 10 hours of gameplay. The classes to choose from are familiar
to the gamer so that they do not need to log out and scour the web to
look up some obscure word describing what is essentially a Ranger. |

Aion : A look at the MMORPG coming attractions in 2009Jan 16, 2009 07:00:00 PM News Item: 7818
Filed under: At a glance, MMORPG industry, New titles, belief Now that we're comfortably settling in to our new digs at casa de 2009, it seems like the best time to reflect on what we have to look forward to in the coming year. Eurogamer has done the dirty work for us, as they've compiled a handy article detailing the coming attractions.
All Points Bulletin tops their list as the star attraction, citing enthusiasm for the GTA-style action and depth of customization. SOE's The Agency and Free Realms, along with Cryptic's Champions Online and NetDevil's Jumpgate Evolution round out the remaining top spots on this list, for varying reasons. Some honorable point outs include Aion, Darkfall, EVE's Walking in Stations expansion, Earthrise, Global Agenda and many more expected to see the light of day this year or next. Will all of these games actually make it to a 2009 release, or will 2010 truly be the year of epic MMORPG commencees?A look at the MMORPG coming attractions in 2009 Fri, 16 Jan 2009 19:00:00 EST. Aion : Aion producer Brian Knox conversationedJan 14, 2009 03:30:00 PM News Item: 7799
Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Aion, Interviews, Launches, New titles Aion: The Tower of Eternity has been kicking ass over in its local territory of Korea, and we're sure that there's a growing throng of folks out in the rest of the world that are dying to try it out. Massive Gamer Magazine in recent times had an conversation with Brian Knox, a producer for the game, and what he said didn't give us much hope for betas outside of Korea -- at least not in any meaningful form. He says (correctly) that gamers are quick to judge a title on its beta, and that they would prefer to have "exclusive preview events" to show off the game at its best instead. Having said that, Korea did have a beta before commence, and with any luck we will too.
A lot of the conversation is spent discussing Aion's high level of customization. Knox alleges that the tooncreation system is so robust that it would be potentialto "literally create your own race within a race" by tweaking the sliders. As gamers level up, they will have the chance to equip stones that will change existing skills or grant new ones, further adding to toonuniqueness. The other aspect of the game that Knox seemed very keen to talk about is the flying mechanic. Far from being tacked on, flight is intended to be integral to the gameplay in Aion, and its strategic use will be of the utmost importance in combat. To find out more, look into the full conversation, which is now obtainable online.Aion producer Brian Knox conversationed Wed, 14 Jan 2009 15:30:00 EST. Comments
Aion : New Aion screens reveal a diversity of beautyJan 09, 2009 03:00:00 PM News Item: 7798
Filed under: Aion, New titles, News items
We've long since felt assured in our notion that Aion is a pretty game, but these newest screens on Strategy Informer only further confirm things. And while we're on the subject of pretty screens, it should be point outed that Aion is a game that's running on a heavily tweaked version of CryEngine -- the same one used for Far Cry. So while the game does look absolutely stunning, we dospeculatehow well it scales to lower-end machines. And for that matter, how good the game looks on those lower settings.
One thing we can be sure of is that the environment team went all out on design. Greens, purples, blues, reds and more actually help diversify things. As for those tech related queries, more should be revealed when the game nears its release sometime this year, at least we hope it releases this year.New Aion screens reveal a diversity of beauty Fri, 09 Jan 2009 15:00:00 EST. Over at The Vault, they've put up an exhaustive list of all the MMORPG titles you should have your eye on throughout the new year. While they sort of term it as thought it's a big list of games coming out this year, we think they know it's unlikely all of those games are going to be released in the next twelve months. With that in mind, if you aren't sure what games you should have on your radar (and you haven't clicked our handy "upcoming MMORPGs" widget above), this massive list will bring you up to date.
Here at , of course, we've been doing our own level best to keep you updated on a lot of these titles, be they AAA superhero games like Champions Online or DC Universe Online. We've talked fervently about Star Wars: The Old Republic, and given you the skinny on under-the-radar titles like Aion, FreeRealms, and Jumpgate Evolution. We've even walked away from our precious fantasy to talk about games like APB or The Agency. The Vault's list is a great one to run down - check it out to see what game you should be obsessing over today!

As we point outed earlier this month, the lore of Aion is shaping up into some intriguing backstory. In what seems to be bi-weekly installments, the folks at NCsoft are giving us bits and pieces of what Aion is all about. In the latest piece, the epic cataclysmic event that we've heard so much about has finally been revealed.

This chapter, as with all previous chapters in Aion lore, is told through two opposing viewpoints: the Elyos and the Asmodian. Aion : Worlds.com files suit against NCsoft for patent infringementDec 29, 2008 03:00:00 PM News Item: 7514
Filed under: MMORPG industry, News items, Legal, Virtual worlds
You might remember earlier in the month we reported on Worlds.com placing down patents on two technologies that we commonly use in the MMORPG industry -- scalable chat and system and method of enabling users of interacting in a virtual space -- and how much havoc this could play with our favorite games. We also made the assumption that lawyers were going to begin marching from Worlds.com with suits in hand, beginning their demands of money.
It turns out our assumption was right. Worlds.com has filed the necessary paper work to bring a suit against one of the big names in our industry: NCsoft. The suit was filed on Christmas Eve, December 24th, and charged NCsoft with infringement of patent 7,181,690, the system and method of enabling users of interacting in a virtual space, which was granted in early 2007. The suit cites all NCsoft titles, from Lineage to Aion, as the grounds for the patent infringement.
As ashortside note, patent 7,181,690 was filed in 2000 -- over a year after EverQuest commenceed and dominated the fledgling industry with somewhere around 300,000 subscribers.
We contacted Worlds.com for comment on the 14th of December in connection with our first story, but they have not returned our requests for comment.
We'll keep our ears to the ground as more developments appear in this story.
Update: We have additional commentary on this patent suit.Worlds.com files suit against NCsoft for patent infringement Mon, 29 Dec 2008 15:00:00 EST. Comments
