SWG Star Wars Galaxies Game Overview

Gameplay features

Geography

Star Wars Galaxies began with ten planets: Tatooine, Corellia, Naboo, Talus, Rori, Dantooine, Yavin IV, Lok, the forest moon of Endor, and Dathomir.

Later In the 2nd expansion, Rage of the Wookiees, the Wookiee planet Kashyyyk was added. The Trials of Obi-Wan which was the 3rd expantion SWG Introduced the planet Mustafar. The original 10 planets have approximately 225 square kilometers of game space while the expansion planets of Kashyyyk and Mustafar are smaller and are instanced. SWG features 12 space zones each encompassing 3400 cubic kilometers of navigable space. Nine of the zones are associated with one or more of the planets. Mustafar has no space Zone association. Kessel and Deep Space have no planets and are primarealy used for high level gameplay and PVP combat. The Ord Manrell sector is a space-only zone with a space station called Nova Orion where pilots can land and acquire quests.

Graphics

The game has been praised for its realistic character models, lush environments and detailed architecture

Points of interest and cameos

Points of interest that players are able to visit in the game include R2-D2,C-3PO, their escape pod on Tatooine, the abandoned Rebel bases on Dantooine and Yavin IV, the Naboo Royal Palace, the notorious pirate Nym in his stronghold on Lok, Ewoks and Rancors. Other main characters include Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Emperor Palpatine, Jan Dodonna, Boba Fett, Admiral Ackbar, Jabba, Bib Fortuna, Salacious Crumb, Wedge Antilles, Gavyn Sykes, Max Rebo, HK-47, Boss Nass, Admiral Thrawn, the "reincarnation" of General Grievous as NK-Necrosis, and the Force ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
There are also References made of characters from the Star Wars Expanded Universe, such as HK-47 from the Knights of the Old Republic series of games and Grand Admiral Thrawn and Mara Jade from the Thrawn trilogy. The game also references the other two Star Wars and players may encounter the Gorax species from Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure, and the base of the Sanyassan Marauders, as seen in Ewoks: The Battle for Endor.

Species and professions

Players can choose from 10 species : Human, Twi'lek, Wookiee, Zabrak, Trandoshan, Rodian, Bothan, Mon Calamari, Sullustan and Ithorian. There are 9 professions: Jedi, Smuggler, Bounty Hunter, Commando, Spy, Officer, Trader Medic, and Entertainer.
Players can also choose from three Pilot sub professions and optionally enter the Politician sub profession.
Characters can specialize in different areas of their main professions including Beast Mastery.

Ships

Players may acquire and pilot ships of various sizes. Ships range from fighter sized ships to ships like the Millennium Falcon. Some players chose to play SWG in space while others prefer planetary settings.

Combat mechanics

Ground combat is real time and it is similar to first person shooters. Players aim a targeting reticule at a target use thier left mouse button to fire. Auto aim and auto fire features are available which create a more traditional combat experience and players useing those options are rewarded with an increased chance to do maximum damage. Players gain access to additional combat abilities called "specials" As they gain levels. These specials usually have a cool-down time before they can be used again. In addition to providing powerful damage attacks, specials can be used to heal, buff, debuff and crowd control. Level advancement allows players to gain use of more powerful weapons.SWG Players also earn Expertise Points as they gain in level which can be used in their professions expertise tree. They can allot 45 points into abilities and attributes to make their characters more diverse, from weapons specialties to healing and armor proficiencies.

Player housing, guilds, and cities

Characters can construct, own and decorate several types of buildings including houses, guild halls, cantinas, and city halls. These buildings can be organized into cities. Players may hold elections for Mayor. Elected mayors may grant city members certain rights to place structures within the city and eject players from cities as needed. Reelections are held every two weeks. Larger cities with high population may add services and facilities such as vehicle repair garages, shuttleports, hospitals, cloning facilities, cantinas and garden displays and may show up on the planetary maps.

The SWG gameplay encourages realistic social institutions such as a dynamic player economy and other real life social institutions like a division of labor. SWG original game design socialized players to specialize their characters by mastering one or two professions and join guilds, in which players relate to one another primarily in terms of their professions and as in real life, people are tied to one another by organic solidarity.

Other features

  • Ground vehicles and starships: landspeeders, swoops, X-wings, speeder bikes, TIE fighters and even several of the YT series of ships)
  • Virtual Economy where players are responsible for creating items including blasters, starships, armor, clothing, food, housing, furniture and a variety of droids. Items are produced from player collected raw materials and loot.
  • A large selection of emotes, moods, and associated animations. These not only affect an avatar's physical appearance but also the text used to describe a character's speech.
  • Player Guilds, Chat functionality and other community features.
  • Players may place bounties on opponents that killed them. Player character bounty hunters can then pick up another character's "bounty mission" on the terminals and track the character down. There can be up to three bounty hunters tracking a character at any time.
  • Characters can hire Entertainers to change their appearance in-game with better options available at creation. Every visual aspect of a character is changeable at any time after character creation except species and gender.

Expansions

An Empire Divided<

The base game, titled Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided. At the time of its initial release, the game was much different than it is now. There were no Vehicles, creature mounts, Player housing was. Character progression was also different. Characters started out in one of six basic professions, Marksman, Medic, Brawler, Entertainer, Scout, or Artisan and were able to pick up any of the other five after character creation. Each profession consisted of a tree-like structure of skills, with a single Novice level, four independent branches of four levels each, and a Master level which required completion of all four branches. These skills were purchased with experience points gained through related activity. Characters could specialize into advanced professions a become a Bounty Hunter, Creature Handler, Doctor, Ranger or Musician. There were twenty four advanced professions. Advanced professions had certain requirements from the base professions that had to be met and some were more restrictive than others.
