FFXI Game Overview
Final Fantasy XI or FFXI is a MMO massively
multiplayer online role playing game MMORPG. The FFXI story is set in the
fantasy world Vana'diel, where players perform tasks to improve powers
and abilities or to complete quests. There are also 100's of quests which
allow players to gain rewards, as well as a large number of player versus
player PVP competitions.
Gameplay
Final Fantasy XI players are able to customize their characters in several
ways including race, hair color, gender, body size, face, job, and
allegiance. All battles are in real time.
There are 32 public servers available for play with 15,000 to 20,000 players
on each server. Players have the ability to move between
servers. Players of different languages play on the same servers and are
able to interact through the games automatic language translation
system.
Interface
Players can use any combination of a keyboard, mouse and game controller to
play FFXI. The overhead display in FFXI has a log window, menus, and
several game information elements. The log window displays system messages,
battle messages and text input by other players and these messages may be
filtered by the player. Menus allow players to access different commands and
configuration options. The action command menu gives the player options to
interact with the game world.
Basic gameplay
Final Fantasy XI game play consists of missions by which the storyline
of the game is told, and quests. Undertaking missions will advance a characters
rank and allows access new areas, gain new privileges and advance
storylines. Undertaking quests offer various rewards and fame.
Job system and Character classes
FFXI's job system is mostly adapted from Final Fantasy III. Jobs
have unique abilities which players must activate to gain its effects,
they last a limited time and have a cooldown time before they can be used
again. Traits are passive abilities which are always in effect and there is a
special ability that performs some extraordinary function and has an
extraordinary 2 hour cooldown period. Players may change their jobs any
time and are also able to get a support job once they have achieved level
18 in order to learn additional skills and try different combinations. Players
improve their job abilities by defeating monsters or completing
quests. There are 20 different jobs to choose from which include
Warrior, White Mage, Monk, Red Mage, Black Mage, Thief, Paladin, Dark
Knight, Ranger, Beastmaster, Bard, Summoner, Ninja, Samurai, Dragoon, Blue Mage,
Corsair, Dancer, Puppetmaster, and Scholar.
Game economy
Final Fantasy XI has a player-based economy and
relies heavily on its Auction Houses which are located in each of
the major cities of Vana'diel. There are currency sinks in FFXI to control
inflation in the form of fees and taxes, including percentage tax on items
purchased, a fee for putting items up for auction, Transportation fees and
an item storage fee.
Setting
The main world of FFXI is Vana'diel and consists of two main landmasses
with two smaller islands flanking them and features diverse climates,
ranging from the northern glaciers to the southern deserts. There are four
main cities in Vana'diel, Bastok, San d'Oria, Jeuno and Windurst. The parts
of the game world is made up of a number of outdoor, dungeon, and minor town
areas split into regions. Most areas are accessible by walking however there
are various modes of transportation which include the
Chocobo, airships and special spells.
The game is set 20 years
after the Crystal War when the nations of Bastok, San d'Oria and Windurst
on the main continent fought and defeated the Shadow Lord and his army of
beastmen. A parallel world named Dynamis can also be explored. It is a dream
world created by the god Diabolos.
Characters
There are five playable races in FFXI
- Elvaan which are strong melee fighters and reasonable healers
but weak in black magic
- Hume is a race which resembles humans with no notable
strengths or weaknesses
- Galka which is an all male race. They are strong and tough but
weak in magic
- Mithra is a very agile and dexterous race but lack charisma.
They are catlike humanoids and only the females are playable characters
- Tarutaru are tiny humanoids with incredible power over black magic
but are physically weak
There are also two primary non playable races known as the
Zilart which is an ancient race, and the Kuluu similar to the
Zilart and thought to be inferior to it. FFXI also features
several typical Final Fantasy monsters and races such as the Goblin, Orc,
Yagudo, and Quadav.
