Final Fantasy XI : FFXI Combat Buddy System IncomingBy: Morvelaira
Aug 29, 2008 10:47:32 PM News Item: 4788
Like Everquest II, but different
Final Fantasy XI will soon be coming out with a new "Level Sync" system, designed to help people differing levels gain experience together. It will basically work like a normal group, only everyone's level will be scaled down to the same level as a target player. Note: I said scaled DOWN... not up.
The new Level Sync system is the result of extensive discussions on how to resolve these concerns, while preserving game balance and avoiding abuse and power-leveling by RMT groups. It addresses the issues that have resulted from a steady stream of new, low-level players joining an existing game world populated by scores of high-level veterans, and is part of the ongoing effort to clean up the FFXI community and remove players in violation of the users' agreement.
At the heart of the feature is the new ability for members of a party to "power down" to the level of a designated target player. Now friends will be able to adventure together and gain experience as if they were all the same level!
For more information on the new "Level Sync" system, please check the Final Fantasy XI Official Site.

Final Fantasy XI : Mythic's Jacobs: WoW Killer Only $100 MillionBy: Medeor
Aug 29, 2008 06:38:12 PM News Item: 4783
How many commas are in a gagillion?
Hold your pinky to your mouth and say it with me, "One Billion Dollars." Then look awkwardly around and sense the stares from nonbelievers, rethink your position, and then say this, "One hundred million dollars." This should meet with acceptance and we can fade to black.
After setting the interwebz on fire a while back with a statement that a billion dollars would be required to compete with World of Warcraft, Activision has brought out some naysayers to their "ridiculous numbers" as Mythic Entertainment's Mark Jacobs calls it.
Mister Jacobs probably has a pretty good handle on real costs. He can take a look at his actual development costs for a game about to launch, Warhammer Online, and use a multiplier, and maybe a big multiplier to determine how to compete against a four-year old juggernaut in WoW. Jacobs would not comment on how much it cost to produce WAR except to say it was less than $100 million but still a lot of money. In addition to the discussion on battling for the top spot, Mark did describe his vision of success for WAR:
"Would I like us to be number one? Well, of course. Do we have to be number one to be successful? No. I want us to be no less than number two; that would make me very happy.” For the number two spot, Jacobs reasoned that “Warhammer” would need at least a half-million subscribers, which he guessed was close to what “Final Fantasy” and “EverQuest 2” have now. “Let’s just say north of half a million would mean we’re successful. Now how a far north? I wouldn’t mind being a little bit cold.”
Interesting take on the projected FF and EQ2 numbers. Read the rest of the interview at MTV.

Final Fantasy XI : Blizzard: WoW for PS3, 360 is a 'square peg, round hole thing'By: Gino D.
Aug 27, 2008 02:21:36 PM News Item: 4018
Apparently, some people are still thinking of the viability of having World of Warcraft on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Well, it's one of the most successful MMORPGs of all-time, so maybe porting it over to other platforms is a good thing, for financial reasons (if you're following Square Enix's line of thought).
However, running parallel to Hideo Kojima's statement yesterday (about MGS4 being impossible for the Xbox 360 because the game wasn't designed for the 360 in the first place), J. Allen Brack and Tom Chilton of Blizzard both agree that WoW was always intended to be played on the PC.
In a recent interview with Videogamer, they both reiterated the fact that WoW won't be heading for consoles.
Brack says that WoW was "designed to have a keyboard and a mouse" and that the controls are really - to use Kojima's word from yesterday - optimized for a PC control scheme. Brack continues: "If you think about mapping those controls and all those different type of buttons that you have to a console without a keyboard for chatting, it's a very challenging proposition."
Chilton, likewise, explained that it's not a worthwhile endeavor to bring WoW to consoles;
It's really not that we have anything against consoles," Chilton said. "I mean we love console games also. And I'm sure there will be a successful MMO sometime on a console. So it has nothing to do with that. It's just more like a square peg round hole thing for our game. It just wasn't designed with that in mind.
But then... when Videogamer raised the point that Funcom will be bringing their Age of Conan to the Xbox 360 - and that they've got some technology to map the keyboard buttons to a 360 controller - Chilton simply replies that he thinks that WoW wouldn't be "a very good experience playing like that."
While the PS3 has the upcoming Wireless Keypad, and the 360 its Chatpad, they aren't all that big, y'know. As Brack said, it'll be a very challenging experience indeed.

Final Fantasy XI : Final Fantasy XI introduces Level Syncing featureBy: Victor B.
Aug 27, 2008 10:22:28 AM News Item: 4017
Those of you in Vana'diel who want to play with friends of varying levels whilst retaining the challenge of the game will be glad to know that Final Fantasy XI (PC, Xbox 360, PS2 ) will be getting a Level Sync system.
According to the Final Fantasy website, this Level Sync system essentially allows higher-leveled players to "power down" and play with lower-leveled characters, gaining experience equal to their level's limit all the while.
In addition, the Level Sync feature also adds the dynamic of character items getting scaled down to fit the general level they're playing at.
The news on the official site mentions that this new feature is meant to address
the issues that have resulted from a steady stream of new, low-level players joining an existing game world populated by scores of high-level veterans, and is part of the ongoing effort to clean up the FFXI community and remove players in violation of the users' agreement. More information on the Level Sync system can be found in the source article. Needless to say, it looks to be a worthwhile addition to the game that adds more fun to the whole MMORPG experience.

Final Fantasy XI : Final Fantasy XI to receive mentoring-esque Level Sync systemBy: Samuel Axon
Aug 27, 2008 10:00:00 AM News Item: 4424
Filed under: Fantasy, Final Fantasy XI, Game mechanics, News items
Square-Enix is taking another step towards making Final Fantasy XI a little bit more playable for the masses by implementing what it calls the "Level Sync" system. The feature resembles the mentoring systems found in EverQuest II or Age of Conan in that it allows higher level players to drop down to friends' levels and adventure with them while gaining experience.
In its announcement of this feature, Square-Enix went out of its way to emphasize that it has built in the system safeguards against abuse by powerlevelers and gold farmers. There are also some reasonable limitations intended to keep the game streamlined, fun, and balanced. For example, equipment-based stat bonuses will scale down with each level a player drops.
There are explicit details at the official Final Fantasy XI website about how experience gains and equipment scale. We approve of this addition (as if you needed us to); in fact, we wonder why certain other games still don't have it. Being able to play with friends regardless of their time commitment and experience is a big positive, and we can't even think of a substantial drawback.

Final Fantasy XI : Final Fantasy XI update to eliminate 18+ hour boss takedownsBy: James Egan
Aug 24, 2008 10:00:00 AM News Item: 4423
Filed under: Fantasy, Final Fantasy XI, Events, in-game, Forums, Game mechanics, Guilds, Patches, News items, PvE The players of Final Fantasy XI have voiced their anguished concerns over a certain Notorious Monster (NM), and Square Enix seems to have listened. We recently reported on the extreme levels of commitment needed to take down the NM Pandemonium Warden in Final Fantasy XI. A linkshell (guild) ironically called Beyond the Limitation attempted to take the boss on over a solid 18 hour period, and still weren't able to succeed. Consensus from FFXI's players who've been vocal on the matter is that Pandemonium Warden isn't just beyond this particular linkshell's limits, they're beyond anyone's limits.
In response, Square Enix stated, "Discussion has spread significantly throughout forums, and it has become apparent that this is indeed an issue of major unrest in the community." The company implied that the methods players have employed may have been sub-optimal, as Square Enix didn't anticipate that NM encounters would be as protracted as they've proven to be. To remedy this, they will alter the difficulty of defeating Pandemonium Warden, Absolute Virtue, and Jailer of Love. "The aim of these changes is to create battles where a decisive outcome may be reached within a shorter period of time," they said. The changes will go into effect with the next version update, which is scheduled for early September.

Final Fantasy XI : Final Fantasy XI collectible confers unique in-game abilityBy: James Egan
Aug 20, 2008 05:00:00 PM News Item: 4422
Filed under: Fantasy, Final Fantasy XI, News items Final Fantasy XI players who are into collectibles have a new item to lust over. There's a new addition to the Final Fantasy XI Player's Collection, which is available for a limited time only: The Tidal Talisman. It's a $43 silver-plated pendant with a side-benefit that's the real selling point. It comes with a virtual counterpart, which could prove very useful. The in-game version of the Tidal Talisman allows a player to teleport to locations previously visited in Vana'diel. Or, as it's described over at FFXI's site, it confers "the ability to project phantasmal robes over the wearer's body and enabling the wearer to teleport to distant lands in the blink of an eye."
For those who are on the fence about shelling out $43 for a FFXI pendant, Square-Enix appeals to a gamer's sense of urgency regarding scarcity of virtual goods: "We have no plans to bring this item back in the future, so all players are encouraged to take advantage of this unique one-time opportunity!" Final Fantasy XI : It's Pandemonium in Final Fantasy XIBy: James Egan
Aug 16, 2008 04:00:00 PM News Item: 4421
Filed under: Fantasy, Final Fantasy XI, Forums, Game mechanics, Guilds, Endgame, News items, PvE News has spread of a grueling new enemy encounter in Final Fantasy XI. The Notorious Monster (NM) Pandemonium Warden is one of the strongest opponents players can face in the game. But it seems Square-Enix may have raised the bar too high, given the extremes to which players must go to defeat Pandemonium Warden.
A linkshell (guild) called Beyond the Limitation recently faced off against Pandemonium Warden over an 18 hour period, but the NM was still going strong. The NM shapeshifts into multiple forms, making it even more of a challenge to defeat; Beyond the Limitations fought Pandemonium Warden through twenty of his possible forms, some of which took hours to kill. Pet Food Alpha, a Final Fantasy XI community site, quotes a member of Beyond the Limitation stating: "People were passing out and getting physically ill. We decided to end it before we risked turning into a horrible new story about how video games ruin people's lives." Continue reading It's Pandemonium in Final Fantasy XI Comments
