As a long-time movie buff, I've always been fascinated by sequels. I know, they have a terrible reputation and everyone gets this face like he's digesting a porcupine when discussing them, but there's something fun about them as well. I think we always want a good story to continue, to see what happens next, and to answer the question, "What would the first film be like if it were put in the hands of a complete boob?" It would be an entertaining trainwreck, that's what.
Even though the MMORPGRPG genre is in its toddler stage, it's seen a number of sequels, prequels and spin-offs, just the same as other types of entertainment. Video game sequels for hit titles are safer financial investments than striking out into new territory, so it makes sense that MMORPG studios would follow this pattern as well.
Right now there are loads of MMORPG sequels and spin-offs in the works -- including EverQuest Next, PlanetSide Next, Guild Wars 2, Mabinogi 2, MapleStory 2, Phantasy Star Online 2, Dust 514, and even a potentialUltima Online sequel -- so it's safe to say that the trend won't be dying down anytime soon. However, today I want to look at 10 sequels that already made it to release and briefly examine how they stacked up to their predecessors. Oh yes, there will be blood after the jump -- and I will drink your milkshake!Continue reading The Perfect Ten: Sequelitis The Perfect Ten: Sequelitis Thu, 19 May 2011 11:30:00 EST.

Sword of The New World : Ragnarok Online creator to make new MMORPG in the vein of RagnarokNov 30, 2009 11:00:00 PM News Item: 12925
Filed under: Fantasy, MMORPG industry, New titles, Ragnarok Online, News items
At this year's G* Game Expo, in addition to the earlier sexy Blade & Soul gameplay video, it seems that the original creator of Ragnarok Online is working on a new MMORPG venturethat he describes as "in the same vein" as Ragnarok.
Gamasutra is reporting that Hakkyu Kim, RO's creator, is working on two new MMORPGs. One a more basic MMORPG that features the control of a single character, and another MMORPG that is done in the 2D sprites/3D backgrounds style of RO, except with a spotlight on action.
While neither of these games will be a new Ragnarok, as Gravity Interactive holds the license to the Ragnarok series, it's good to see Kim returning to his roots after his work on Granado Espada, more commonly known as Sword of the New World in the US. Sword of The New World : The9 sees enormous drop in profits after split with BlizzardNov 29, 2009 12:00:00 PM News Item: 12920
Filed under: World of Warcraft, MMORPG industry, News items, Legal
In a news story that we're sure will surprise precisely nobody at all, The9 -- China's previous operator for World of Warcraft -- has reported a serious decline in profits for this last quarter. Since last year when The9 still had World of Warcraft in its stable of games to now, they have seen a staggering 94% drop in revenue. Since the split became final in June of this year, there was also a 91% drop between last quarter and this one. Between The9's lawsuit against Blizzard for (among other things) software copyright infringement and selling nearly 15% of its shares to Activision Blizzard competitor, EA, The9 has pretty well make certaind that there's never going to be any kissing-and-making-up over this whole mess. Still, not everything is completely negative for The9. In the on-again-off-again World of Warcraft existence in the Chinese market altogether, owing to the squabble between The Ministry of Culture and the General Administration of the Press and Publication (GAPP), they've seen an increase in gamers from when they initially lost World of Warcraft. According to reports, the increase -- a modest bump from 3.2 to 3.4 million gamers -- is owing largely to a new update to Soul of the Ultimate Nation, as well as their other games Sword of the New World, FIFA Online, and Atlantica Online. Now, so long as more of their shareholders don't wind up suing them for making misheading statements about their connection with Blizzard, things might just start looking up for thisprevious major gamer in the Chinese MMORPG market.
