Perfect World : The MMORPG Report: Casey says frak editionJun 02, 2011 10:00:00 PM News Item: 17246
Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Age of Conan, Free-to-play, The MMORPG Report, Battlestar Galactica Online, Miscellaneous
This week's MMORPG Report is all about Casey's ego. Not one shred of MMORPG news bullied its way onto the show this week, unless you count a story about Battlestar Galactica Online reaching two million subscribers as news. OK, maybe you can count Age of Conan going free-to-play, or maybe the newest Minecraft update is technically news. Perhaps Perfect World Entertainment buying Cryptic Studios would be considered news, too. But let's not forget: The MMORPG Report is actually about Uncle Casey's Mail Bag. So that is exactly what will fill the rest of this post.
The Mail Bag this week is all about love, love, and memes. Fans share their love for each other, love for Casey, and love for Morgan Webb. Yes, she's been gone for two weeks, but apparently Casey's manly smell has not ousted the memory of the time Morgan hosted the MMORPG Report. One fan has not forgotten; he was so inspired that he created a meme about it just to show how much he cared.
Jump past the break if you are interested in catching a glimpse of Casey Schreiner's ego. We have the full video ready to go. Maybe you will catch the news that we missed while staring at Casey's incredible beard.Continue reading The MMORPG Report: Casey says frak edition The MMORPG Report: Casey says frak edition Thu, 02 Jun 2011 22:00:00 EST.

Perfect World : Behind the Mask: Perfect World and the futureJun 02, 2011 05:00:00 PM News Item: 17302
Filed under: Super-hero, Events, real-world, MMORPG industry, belief, Free-to-play, Champions Online, Behind the Mask
If I were to describe the emotions of the Champions Online gamerbase regarding the Perfect World buyout, I would have to say "mixed." Some gamers are happy that the days of Atari are behind them, and some are actually skeptical about the future of the C-Store.
CO is a fairly "pay-to-win" game in that Gold members have a lot of gameplay advantages over their non-subscribing counterparts. A lot of gamers are suggesting that the C-Store might become inundated with paid features and that we might potentialy see the removal of certain free features (like global-purchased respecs).
I am cautiously optimistic about the whole thing. Perfect World Entertainment holds controlling shares in Runic Games, and if the recent Mac and console ports of Torchlight are any indication of PWE's approach to management, I'd be more than happy to welcome our new alien overlords.Continue reading Behind the Mask: Perfect World and the future Behind the Mask: Perfect World and the future Thu, 02 Jun 2011 17:00:00 EST.

Perfect World : Perfect World acquires Cryptic StudiosMay 31, 2011 08:15:00 AM News Item: 17300
Filed under: Sci-fi, Super-hero, MMORPG industry, News items, Star Trek Online, Legal, Champions Online
We've been on pins and needles since Atari announced two weeks ago that it was planning to sell off Cryptic Studios. Champions Online and Star Trek Online gamers were worried about the future of their titles, generating many rumors as to what might happen next .
Today, we know the answer. Perfect World Company has inked a deal to purchase Cryptic from Atari. Euro Investor has the full agreement between the two companies, which facts the specifics of this $50+ million purchase. The Chinese firm, which already has a host of MMORPGs under its umbrella, is taking over 100% of Cryptic's equity from Atari.
Perfect World's Michael Chi thinks that this will give the company more credence in the western market: "We are very pleased to sign the agreement to acquire Cryptic Studios. This strategic acquisition will add attractive game titles to our portfolio, which will help us further penetrate into the U.S. and global online game markets. More importantly, Cryptic Studios' highly reputable development team and its technology platform will further strengthen our well-recognized R&D capabilities. We deem this as another noteworthy achievement of our global expansion efforts."
Hopefully, this deal will mean nothing but good things for Cryptic, which is also deep into development with Neverwinter.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!] Perfect World acquires Cryptic Studios Tue, 31 May 2011 08:15:00 EST.

Perfect World : EVE Online gamers raise over $44,000 for Japan relief fundApr 03, 2011 09:00:00 AM News Item: 17076

Never let it be said that gamers don't have big hearts. When Japan was hit by an earthquake and the ensuing tsunami, citizens around the world stepped up to donate to tragedy relief agendas. Several MMORPG creators have made substantial donations using profits from their games. NCSoft made a enormous donation of 500 million yen (6.3 million USD), and Sony Online Entertainment donated 300 million yen (3.6 million U.S. dollars). SOE, gPotato, Perfect World Entertainment and Hi-Rez studios have all been running schemes to help gamers donate, ranging from special once-only microtransaction items to just donating a percentage of all cash shop proceeds to charity.
EVE Online's developer CCP Games has encouraged donations through their unique PLEX system. Players who couldn't afford to donate cash were encouraged to buy PLEX in-game using ISK and donate them to the relief fund. CCP would then scrap the PLEX items and donate their full purchase value to charity. The scheme has been very successful at raising money in previous tragedys, raising over 40,000 USD for the Haitian earthquake fund and roughly a further 20,000 USD for the flooding in Pakistan.
In a new devblog, CCP Fallout has released the final effects of EVE's charity drive. A total of 2549 PLEX, eachworthy of17.5 USD, was donated to the scheme by gamers. CCP will be donating the full value of 44,607.50 USD to the Red Cross in the name the EVE Online community, and will be paying for all of the tax and management costs themselves. EVE gamers have now donated a total of 108,000 USD through the PLEX for Good scheme. Head over to the devblog for the facts of the charity drive and some fascinating information on three gamers who helped make it a success. Perfect World : Perfect World Entertainment invests in Torchlight MMORPGMay 18, 2010 10:00:00 AM News Item: 14276
Filed under: MMORPG industry, News items
Torchlight received quite a bit of attention last year when Runic Games announced that they would be releasing the game as a single-gamer, with an eye for MMORPG development in the next 18 months or so. Since then, Torchlight has done very well for itself: Runic Games in recent times announced that they had sold over 500,000 units.
The success inspired confidence in publisher Perfect World Entertainment, who solidified their commitment by purchasing an $8.4 million majority stake in Runic Games. PWE -- best known for their Perfect World MMORPG and more in recent times Battle of the Immortals -- is the publisher of the Torchlight MMORPG and the game itself can be found under the Perfect World banner. PWE hopes that the combined expertise of the two companies will spell success for both: "By collaborating more closely with Runic's professional team, we seek to combine their creativity and expertise in game development with our deep understanding of the online game market to create global titles." Perfect World Entertainment invests in Torchlight MMORPG Tue, 18 May 2010 10:00:00 EST.

Perfect World : Battle of the Immortals closed beta delayed until AprilFeb 11, 2010 09:00:00 AM News Item: 13595
Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, MMORPG industry, News items, Free-to-play
If you've been waiting to play the closed beta for Battle of the Immortals, it looks like you're going to be waiting a bit longer.
According to a blog post by Perfect World Entertainment, Battle of the Immortals isn't just quite ready for it's debut. Instead of rushing it out the door, the company wishes to take some more time to iron out the finer facts of the game, namely native support for Windows 7, 64-bit OS support, revised shop structure, revised AI behavior, and much more.
Because of all of this, the closed beta has been delayed until April, a full two months away from the original CB date, which was today. However, as their blog post says, "A late game is only late once. A bad game is a bad game forever." Battle of the Immortals closed beta delayed until April Thu, 11 Feb 2010 09:00:00 EST.
