Holic Online : The Road to Mordor: Making your alts work for youJun 03, 2011 03:00:00 PM News Item: 17409
Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Free-to-play, The Road to Mordor
I have a confession to make. My name is Justin, and I'm a Lord of the Rings Online altoholic.
I know. I have a problem! I'm weak! DON'T STARE WITH THOSE ACCUSING EYES!
I always start out in games with the best of intentions: I'm going to stick with just one character, at least until I hit the level cap. I'll only make new characters to reserve names I like. I won't get class envy andspeculatewhat's on the other side of the fence. I'll stay strong! I'll be an oak!
And then I turn out to be a willow tree, blowing about in the winds of whimsy, and suddenly I end up with alts staggered all over the leveling track. It's all right; I've come to embrace my altoholic tendencies because it actually is who I am as a gamer. I like to sample everything, to try out different approaches to the game, and if I don't end up with a maxed-out uber-raider, then I can live with it.
If you follow this pattern and are prone to rolling up a lot of alts in LotRO, there are several advantages you can gain over the monogamous gamers out there. Today I want to take a look at how you can make your alts work for you, if only to give you an excuse to keep rolling them!Continue reading The Road to Mordor: Making your alts work for you The Road to Mordor: Making your alts work for you Fri, 03 Jun 2011 15:00:00 EST.

Holic Online : City of Heroes planning to commence the Global Server List on May 10thMay 09, 2011 07:30:00 PM News Item: 17309
Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Events, real-world, News items
There's a distressing shortage of games that let you play worldwide, with gamers from different countries mingling freely. City of Heroes is taking that plunge, however. It was announced back in March that the game's European and North American worldlists would be getting merged into a single global worldlist, and while that merger has been slightly delayed, the current plan is to push the list live on May 10th. That means that if all goes well, gamers from all over the world can play on the game's full complement of worlds starting tomorrow.
As the newspost is quick to point out, if any unforeseen difficulties arise during implementation, the team will postpone the merger until such time as it can be implemented without issues. For the altaholics who make up a fairly large portion of City of Heroes' gamerbase, however, the merger is unambiguous good news, as it gives more toonslots to play with -- and for European gamers, it means more immediate access to patches and the test server. Global access should be live early tomorrow, so get ready to go worldwide. (And let's not forget the invasions and reactivations just around the corner.) City of Heroes planning to commence the Global Server List on May 10th Mon, 09 May 2011 19:30:00 EST.

Holic Online : Ask : These are not the offices editionJan 06, 2011 07:00:00 PM News Item: 16220

It's somewhat astonishing how many citizens think consists of ashortcubicle farm in a large office building. I mean, we talk about how we work from home all the time, but somehow this image persists. So for the record, that picture does not represent where the team works. I'd show you a picture of where I actually work, but it's kind of a mess at the moment, not helped by the fact that I still need to figure out where I'm putting some of my new Transformers. (I think Drift and Terradive should be fighting.)
Now that we've gotten that out of the way, it's time for this week's decidedly less holiday-flavored installment of Ask . But we've still got our questions, this time concerning Final Fantasy XIV, Lord of the Rings Online, and our own pseudo-alcoholic tendencies. (We might not have a single place for everyone to be drinking, no, but we do share certain customs.) As always, send a question along to ask@massively.com or leave one in the comment field!Continue reading Ask : These are not the offices edition Ask : These are not the offices edition Thu, 06 Jan 2011 19:00:00 EST.

Holic Online : Wings Over Atreia: Altaholics anonymousNov 29, 2010 10:00:00 AM News Item: 16185

OK, now I've done it... my status as an oddity at is exposed for all the world to see. I confess -- I do not like to play alts. Whew. There, I said it. That wasn't so hard. And being unique is not such a bad thing, right?
In gaming, and in Aion especially, I definitely feel out of place for this philosophy. After all, Aion not only encourages but rewards you for playing alts; what other game gives you an impressive armor set and weapon only after you reach mid-level on numerous characters? And even for those who eschew playing alts, there are times when you are forced to do so (like I was). Pathetic obtainable inventory space? Make a mule. Miss lower-level solo instances because they were introduced after you were too high of a level? Make a noob. But these are only a couple of examples involving mechanics. What makes citizens create so many alts that they need spreadsheets just to know who has what and is where?
Head past the cut to delve into the pros and cons of managing multiple characters in Atreia.Continue reading Wings Over Atreia: Altaholics anonymous Wings Over Atreia: Altaholics anonymous Mon, 29 Nov 2010 10:00:00 EST.

If you're anything like us, you're a raging altoholic with an EQII toonselect screen crammed full of ratonga wizards, barbarian monks, froglok swashbucklers, and any number of other funky race/class permutations. One of the great joys of SOE's long-running EverQuest sequel is the enormous number of races and classes obtainable for play and now, courtesy of an update coming your way October 5th, Norrathians will no longer be limited to a select number of toonslots.
EQII producer Dave "Smokejumper" Georgeson announced the good news in a post on the official forums. I've been spending so much time in Khitai's Northern Grasslands lately that I'm starting to dream of wolves, 50-foot-tall golems, and crotchety warmonk bosses that mop the floors of their monastery with the remains of my asphyxiated assassin. As such, I figure it's time for a little change of pace, as well as a change of scenery. Ah hell, since I'm an incurable altoholic, let's go ahead and throw a change of toonin there as well. Goodbye squishy 'sin, I'll miss you (not).
Anyway, several alts are in the works, but rather than spotlight on the hows and whys of a new class (more on that in the coming weeks), we'll chew the scenery in this week's Anvil of Crom.
Join me after the cut for a look at the majestic Gateway to Khitai, the latest stop on our tour of Hyboria's many and varied questing zones.

Holic Online : Europe gets a MapleStory OktoberfestSep 19, 2009 12:00:00 PM News Item: 12242
Filed under: At a glance, Fantasy, MapleStory, Events, in-game, Patches, News items, Free-to-play
North Americans, we've been had. MapleStory Europe is getting a crazy drunken Oktoberfest with monsters, parties, and beer.... wait a minute, non-alcoholic beer?! Oh, right, it's MapleStory...
In any case, European MapleStory gamers can look forward to a giant beer tent filled with "drunk" monsters (unless non-alcoholic beer sends them into a woozy state -- they are monsters after all, so who knows) and a brand new map featuring a new Player vs Player play mode. The Ariant map, home of the Ariant Coliseum challenge, pits gamers against one another in capturing monsters "alive" before the other gamer does the same.
Lastly, one final event will have monsters dropping special boxes filled with rare items for the duration of its run in October. These boxes, however, can only be opened with keys bought from the item shop, which means you're going to have to spend a little coin to enjoy this final event.
The MapleStory European only Oktoberfest (curse you Europe, we like Oktoberfest too) will be running from now until October 7th. (*Hears the sound of the Europe crowd rejoicing at NA's lack of Oktoberfest.*) Europe gets a MapleStory Oktoberfest Sat, 19 Sep 2009 12:00:00 EST.
