EverQuest : The Daily Grind: Online toonprofiles?Jan 04, 2009 08:00:00 AM News Item: 7637
Filed under: MMORPG industry, belief, The Daily Grind
Web-accessible online profiles for characters in MMORPGs have been around for a while. The first ones I remember were profiles obtainable for EverQuest gamers. In the years that have passed, they've slowly popped up everywhere. Now you can generally find something about citizens's characters on the game's site, on commercial guild and gamer database sites, or even privately hosted guild sites. Some are very simple, offering a quick overview of gear and talents. Others are far more detailed, like the World of Warcraft armory, or the almost social-networking build of Lord of the Rings Online's gamer pages.
With all that said - some citizens love them, and some citizens absolutely hate them. The reasons vary from gamer to gamer. On the negative side, some feel that others shouldn't be able to look at their gear if they're into Player vs Player, or don't want others knowing how much money they have. As for positives, some like to be able to equategear with others they know to see if they can find ways to improve their own, others think that listing your regular play-times so other folks looking for friends to adventure with can find you is a great idea. This morning we wanted to ask what you thought about online toonprofiles? Do you love them or hate them? What are some of the best - and worst - features you've seen on different MMORPG toonprofile sites? Anything you'd add to your favorite if you could?

EverQuest : Turbine hiring for Microtransaction ManagerJan 01, 2009 12:00:00 PM News Item: 7549
Filed under: Asheron's Call, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Business models, Economy, MMORPG industry, News items We've seen a steady growth in the arena of microtransactions over the last several years, with more and more Western companies noticing the lucrative practices Eastern MMORPG companies have; offering item malls to their gamers. After all, you actually can't ignore the growth of companies like Nexon who are raking in more and more money each year with their free-to-play microtransaction model games. Recently, we've seen Sony Online Entertainment testing the waters in EverQuest and EverQuest II by including ashortnumber of items obtainable for gamers in their pilot in-game item malls, with promises to add more in the future.
Now, it appears that we're starting 2009 with another Western company heading in the direction of adding microtransactions to their in-game landscape. Turbine, despite recent job cuts, has added several job postings in other departments. The one that caught our eye, however, was a recent posting for a "microtransaction/e-commerce manager" who will be in charge of "delivering and maximizing the revenue derived from Turbine's micro-transaction-based in-game store." They've kicked around the idea of adding microtransactions in conversations before, but this posting seems to support a definitive move in that direction.Continue reading Turbine hiring for Microtransaction Manager Turbine hiring for Microtransaction Manager Thu, 01 Jan 2009 12:00:00 EST. I can hear the question forming on your lips now: “Is there actually just one new zone in the entire expansion?” Not quite my friend as there are an entire new series of instances to take into consideration. Included are seven different scenes that will take you everywhere from the Commonlands to the Loping Plains. At each of these scenes are two or three different instance selections that provide a variety of options for your grouping pleasure. If that wasn't enough, the instances will progress in difficulty and believe me when I tell you that these can become challenging.

EverQuest : UPDATE - NCsoft Singled Out in Patent Infringement SuitDec 29, 2008 10:29:09 PM News Item: 7492
Apparently NCsoft's Austin headquarters received one heck of an unpleasant
gift on Christmas Eve, as Worlds.com
filed a complaint against the publisher for infringing on it's virtual
world patent with Texas courts. The suit alleges that NCsoft
infringed on patent 7,181, 690, “System
and Method for Enabling Users to Interact in a Virtual Space”.
Not only does the complaint seek to recover damages, but also
wants NCsoft to be prevented from any further infringement on the
patent.
It's important to note that though the patent was filed on August 3,
2000 (prior to the release of the NCsoft games listed in the
complaint), it wasn't issued until Feb 20, 2007 – well after the release
of the listed games.
The patent itself describes the following
“invention”:
The present invention provides a highly scalable
architecture for a
three-dimensional graphical, multi-user interactive virtual world
system. In a preferred embodiment a plurality of users
interact in the three-dimensional, computer generated graphical space
where each user executes a client process to view a virtual world from
the perspective of that user. The virtual world shows avatars
representing the other users who are neighbors of the user viewing the
virtual world
The description goes on from there, but that should be enough to sound
pretty familiar to anyone who's ever played an MMORPGG in the past ten
years. What's also fascinating to note is a sketch
which
depicts the “invention” as a part of the patent
filing. If you take away the penguins, it looks an awful lot
like Ultima Online,
or earlier versions of EverQuest's
UI, wouldn't you
agree?
This isworthy ofpointing out, because the patent was filed after the
release of the above point outed MMORPGGs, yet alleges to have invented the
system.
What's also of interest is that NCsoft has been singled out, but as of
yet no other U.S. MMORPGG publishers have been named as infringing on the
patent –
Was Sony Online Entertainment avoided at all costs because their MMORPGG
predates the patent filing date? I hate to jump to any hasty
conclusions here, but this sounds like someone trying to make a money
grab based on someone else's, preexisting virtual world
designs.
**UPDATE**
NCsoft could indeed just be the first of many MMORPGG publishers /
creators filed against, according to an update on the allege at Virtual
Worlds News. Representing Worlds.com in the case, Lerner David
Littenberg Krumholz & Mentlik LLP explained that they
would soon begin contacting representatives throughout the industry.
Though no specifics were revealed as to why the infringement allege was
filed against NCsoft first, it could be simply a matter of geographical
scene as was suggested by LDLKM's Stephen F. Roth.
"Being a foreign defendant in Texas is not a pleasant
thing," he said
of NCsoft, which is primarily a Korean company. "The juries are, many
would say, biased towards American plaintiffs and have a propensity to
offer high damages. Some defendants might view them as an unfriendly
jury and it might make the defendant more likely to settle."
While the patent in question may not have been filed until
2000, Roth also explains that it's in fact continued on from
an earlier filing date, November 13, 1995. Though not granted
until 2001, this initial
patent filing would actually predate NCsoft's
founding in 1997, but is notably unreferenced in the current
allege.
It's likely that NCsoft won't be contacted until after the new year,
and once they are they'll have 20 days to respond to the
allege.
What will happen from there though, is anyone's guess, but it's highly
likely that other companies will see similar alleges filed in the near
future. This has the potential to have a rippling effect
throughout not only
the MMORPGG industry, but for any form of 3d virtual world currently in
operation, from Second Life to Sony's Home on the PS3.
In the meantime, we'll be keeping a close watch on events and provide
updates as they unfold.

EverQuest : Worlds.com files suit against NCsoft for patent infringementDec 29, 2008 03:00:00 PM News Item: 7514
Filed under: MMORPG industry, News items, Legal, Virtual worlds
You might remember earlier in the month we reported on Worlds.com placing down patents on two technologies that we commonly use in the MMORPG industry -- scalable chat and system and method of enabling users of interacting in a virtual space -- and how much havoc this could play with our favorite games. We also made the assumption that lawyers were going to begin marching from Worlds.com with suits in hand, beginning their demands of money.
It turns out our assumption was right. Worlds.com has filed the necessary paper work to bring a suit against one of the big names in our industry: NCsoft. The suit was filed on Christmas Eve, December 24th, and charged NCsoft with infringement of patent 7,181,690, the system and method of enabling users of interacting in a virtual space, which was granted in early 2007. The suit cites all NCsoft titles, from Lineage to Aion, as the grounds for the patent infringement.
As ashortside note, patent 7,181,690 was filed in 2000 -- over a year after EverQuest commenceed and dominated the fledgling industry with somewhere around 300,000 subscribers.
We contacted Worlds.com for comment on the 14th of December in connection with our first story, but they have not returned our requests for comment.
We'll keep our ears to the ground as more developments appear in this story.
Update: We have additional commentary on this patent suit.Worlds.com files suit against NCsoft for patent infringement Mon, 29 Dec 2008 15:00:00 EST. Comments
EverQuest : EverQuest II Game Update 52 preview includes revamp of LavastormDec 23, 2008 04:00:00 PM News Item: 7523
Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest II, Patches
Brett Scheinert, game designer on the SOE flagship product EverQuest II, has dropped into the official forums with a sort of 'New Year's Resolution'. In point of fact, it's a preview of new substence coming to the game in Game Update 52! Posting with his forum name of timetraveling, Scheinert promised we'd see the following within the next few months:
- A new instance with 9 bosses geared for two groups at a time. Over half of the bosses will be slated to drop Void Shards, the new metacurrency introduced with the Shadow Odyssey expansion. This will be endgame substence balanced for characters with only the very best gear.
- On top of that, gamers will also see a similar raid balanced for four groups at once.
- Tradeskillers will be seeing another trades instance, this time based in the epic dungeon 'The Void'.
- The classic zone Lavastorm will be seeing numerous improvements, similar to changes made to Everfrost in GU 48.
- Among these changes, gamers will see brand new areas with level 80 solo substence tied into an all-new Lavastorm-based faction.
- This faction will offer numerous pieces of gear to earn, including 12 new armor sets with brand-new appearances. timetraveling makes a point to note that one of these armor sets is going to be a brand-new robe model with helm, shoulders, and legs as seperate visible pieces from the chest-part!
Coming hard on the heels of an entire new expansion with multiple new dungeons, it's fascinating to see the tack the EQ2 designers are taking with this. All new endgame substence to explore, with new loot/appearance rewards tying into their revamp of older substence. It's a great continuation of strides they took forward in 2008, and makes it sound like 2009 will be a great year to be an EverQuest II gamer. Stay tuned to after the holidays for facts on this new substence!EverQuest II Game Update 52 preview includes revamp of Lavastorm Tue, 23 Dec 2008 16:00:00 EST. Comments
