Aion : Aion lore Chapter V reveals cataclysmic eventDec 29, 2008 04:00:00 PM News Item: 7500

As we point outed earlier this month, the lore of Aion is shaping up into some intriguing backstory. In what seems to be bi-weekly installments, the folks at NCsoft are giving us bits and pieces of what Aion is all about. In the latest piece, the epic cataclysmic event that we've heard so much about has finally been revealed.
Check out Chapter V in the ongoing story of how the Tower of Eternity fell and changed the world of Aion forever. This chapter, as with all previous chapters in Aion lore, is told through two opposing viewpoints: the Elyos and the Asmodian. Aion : Worlds.com files suit against NCsoft for patent infringementDec 29, 2008 03:00:00 PM News Item: 7514

You might remember earlier in the month we reported on Worlds.com placing down patents on two technologies that we commonly use in the MMORPG industry -- scalable chat and system and method of enabling users of interacting in a virtual space -- and how much havoc this could play with our favorite games. We also made the assumption that lawyers were going to begin marching from Worlds.com with suits in hand, beginning their demands of money.
It turns out our assumption was right. Worlds.com has filed the necessary paper work to bring a suit against one of the big names in our industry: NCsoft. The suit was filed on Christmas Eve, December 24th, and charged NCsoft with infringement of patent 7,181,690, the system and method of enabling users of interacting in a virtual space, which was granted in early 2007. The suit cites all NCsoft titles, from Lineage to Aion, as the grounds for the patent infringement.
As ashortside note, patent 7,181,690 was filed in 2000 -- over a year after EverQuest commenceed and dominated the fledgling industry with somewhere around 300,000 subscribers.
We contacted Worlds.com for comment on the 14th of December in connection with our first story, but they have not returned our requests for comment.
We'll keep our ears to the ground as more developments appear in this story.

The Tower of Eternity has some new lore posted
for both
the Elyos and the Asmodians, which highlights the effects of the Epic
Cataclysm on each faction. The newest chapters are certainly
an fascinating read, especially if you're looking for a fun tale of
doom to help brighten your holidays!
We still speak of the events that followed that day,
of the sudden
shouts of panic, of the sickening certainty that gripped us all: the
warmongers would have their way, even if they had to sacrifice all of
Atreia to achieve it. We saw Asphel move swiftly and suddenly, and the
Dragon Lord Vitra collapse. The Balaur did not waste time with words.
In an instant, there was carnage and chaos.
Hurray for carnage and chaos – always a festive way to get
into the holiday spirit!

The European and North American release of Aion: The Tower of Eternity
may still be a ways off yet, but since it's November release in Korea
the game has certainly gained a lot of praise from a rapidly expanding
fan base. Not only that, but in an pronouncement made earlier
today Aion has been selected as the winner of the Best Korean Game of
the Year 2008.
We are delighted to announce that Aion: The Tower of
Eternity has won
the coveted 'Best Korean Game of the Year' title in the Korean Game
Awards for 2008. It was widely observed that Aion outshone competing
efforts with its epic scale, immersive story, and stunning graphics and
sound design.
Aion is certainly a stunning looking game, so here's to
hoping this is a good sign that the gameplay is equally compelling and
that the localization for a Western audience goes well.
Either way, it's nice to see some positive news for NCsoft for a
change!

If you've ever wondered what there is to NCsoft's upcoming Aion: The Tower of Eternity MMORPG besides wings, you might be interested in their recent installments of lore for the game.
Each faction, the Elyos and the Asmodian, has their own set of historical folklore that pertains to a certain cataclysmic event in their past. This event separated the two once-friendly groups, but the blame is told differently for each side. At this point, we have an introduction and four chapters for each faction, giving us plenty to read as we prepare for this game's commence.
